Wayzata homes are built around the view

Wayzata wraps around Wayzata Bay at the northeast tip of Lake Minnetonka, and so much of what makes the town special is something you take in through glass: the bay from Lake Street, the 1906 Depot at the end of the Lakewalk, the swimmers at Wayzata Beach in summer. The homes follow suit, from the lake estates along Ferndale Road and Grays Bay to the mix of older homes and new builds in Old Holdridge and the condos downtown at the Promenade.

Our crew comes over from Delano on Highway 12, about 20 minutes away, so Wayzata is a regular stop rather than a special trip. That includes the many addresses that carry a Wayzata ZIP code but technically sit in Orono or Minnetonka.

Lake homes and walls of glass

The lake homes here are built for the view: floor-to-ceiling picture windows, walls of sliders onto the deck, two-story great rooms facing the water. That glass shows every water spot and pollen streak, and much of it is out of reach by hand. Very hard water

Wayzata’s city water is very hard (local water-treatment companies put it around 18 to 24 grains per gallon), and the city’s own drinking-water report notes that iron and manganese can cause staining. When a sprinkler hits the glass, the water dries into mineral rings. Our water-fed poles rinse with purified water, so we don’t leave new spots behind, and our hard-water stain removal can lift the ones already there.

Old trees, lots of pollen

Wayzata’s estate lots are old and wooded, and the sugar maples and basswood in the Big Woods Preserve are a reminder of the forest that stood here first. All that shade means pollen in spring, sap in summer, and glass that dries slowly and shows every streak. Regular cleanings keep up with it.
