A lake town that keeps growing

Waconia sits on the south shore of 3,080-acre Lake Waconia, with Coney Island of the West out on the water and Lake Waconia Regional Park along the shore just east of downtown. Main Street and City Square Park are the heart of town, and every September, Nickle Dickle Day fills downtown with a car show, duck races and an arts-and-crafts fair.

It’s a town that has grown fast. The population roughly doubled between 2000 and 2020, and the city’s 2021 land-use report counted about 42 percent of Waconia’s single-family homes as less than 20 years old. So the homes here run from older houses near Main Street to brand-new builds on the edges of town, about 25 minutes south of our home base in Delano.

Hard water and evening sprinklers

Waconia’s city water comes from deep wells and is very hard; local water-treatment companies measure it around 27 grains per gallon. The city’s watering rules keep sprinklers off between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., so irrigation runs in the early morning and evening, and whatever reaches the glass sits there and dries into mineral spots. Pointing sprinkler heads away from the windows is the best prevention. For spots that are already there, our hard-water stain removal is a separate treatment we quote after seeing the glass.

Newer homes, bigger glass

Newer houses tend to have more glass: tall entryway windows, big back-of-house panes facing the yard or the lake, windows high above a walkout. Our water-fed poles rinse that glass with purified water, so it dries spot-free, and they let us clean most of it from the ground.
