Newer homes, roomy lots and an old railroad town

Medina is a western Hennepin County city of 6,837 people (2020 census), just west of Plymouth, with Corcoran to the north, Orono to the south, and Independence and Maple Plain to the west. The small city of Loretto sits inside its borders, while Hamel is part of Medina itself: platted as early as 1879 and later named for the family that gave land for its railroad depot, it never incorporated and still has its own post office.

Most of Medina’s homes are fairly new. Census survey figures put the median year built at 1999, and neighborhoods like Fields of Medina, Bridgewater at Lake Medina and Foxberry Farms sit among farm fields, wetlands and more than half a dozen lakes. On the east side of Lake Independence, the Independence Beach neighborhood looks out over some 850 acres of water.

City wells and private ones

Medina’s city water comes from wells as deep as 770 feet and is treated to remove iron and manganese, but much of the rural city has no city water, and homes there run on private wells. Either way, sprinkler water usually skips the home’s softener, and wherever it dries on glass it leaves mineral spots. Big houses, lots of high glass

Rural residential lots in Medina start at five acres, and the homes on them are often built big: two stories of windows across the back, transoms and picture windows well over arm’s reach. On windows that have been opening and closing for 20-plus years, track detailing scrubs out the grit where the sashes run.

Lakes, ponds and wetlands

Between Lake Independence, Lake Medina and the ponds and wetlands around the newer neighborhoods, a lot of Medina homes sit near water, and water brings bugs and spider webs to the screens and the side of the house facing it.
