A big suburb with a foothold on the lake

Minnetonka is one of the larger cities in Hennepin County’s western suburbs, with Plymouth to the north and Wayzata to the northwest. It’s one of the 14 member cities of the Lake Minnetonka Conservation District, and at Grays Bay the city runs Gray’s Bay Marina, near where Minnehaha Creek leaves the lake on its way east to Minneapolis.

Census counts show how much Minnetonka has grown: 25,037 residents in 1960, 51,301 in 2000 and 53,781 in 2020. A lot of its homes date from those decades of growth. From our base in Delano, Highway 12 and I-394 bring us straight in.

Grays Bay glass

Minnetonka’s stretch of the lake is small, but homes near Grays Bay make the most of it, with big panes turned toward the water and upper windows a story or two off the ground. We reach most of that glass from the grass with water-fed poles, which use purified water, so the view dries without spots, and the odd window tucked under a deck or roofline gets a ladder.

The ice on Lake Minnetonka usually goes out around mid-April. Whenever it does, that’s a good moment to put spring window cleaning on the calendar, and the visit itself is best in late spring, once pollen season winds down.
