The river town we call home

Delano sits along Highway 12 in the southeastern corner of Wright County, about 27 miles west of downtown Minneapolis, with the South Fork of the Crow River running right through downtown. The town was incorporated in 1876, and three of its early buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places: the 1888 Village Hall on Bridge Avenue, the Eagle Newspaper Office and the 1893 Simon Weldele House.

It’s also where we’re based: Barta Window Washing is locally and family owned, at 320 3rd St S. Delano counted 6,484 residents at the 2020 census and keeps adding homes in newer neighborhoods like Highland Ridge, alongside the older houses near downtown. Every Fourth of July, the town hosts a celebration that dates back to 1857 and is billed as the oldest and largest in Minnesota.

From 46 grains down to 26

Delano Municipal Utilities’ treatment plant removes the iron and manganese that stain, but it only brings hardness down from about 46 grains per gallon to about 26, which is still very hard. When sprinkler spray dries on a patio door or a lower window, those minerals stay behind as white spots. Up high, our water-fed poles rinse with purified water, so they add no spots of their own, and for spots that have built up over several summers, we assess the glass and quote hard-water stain removal separately.

A town full of trees

A survey for the city’s emerald ash borer plan counted about 3,400 ash trees in Delano, and that’s just one kind of tree.
